MENDOCINO — November 2, 2026. California State Parks identifies Mendocino Headlands State Park as a protected coastal landscape wrapping around Mendocino village, with access to the Big River estuary.

Bluffs and natural areas

The park’s rugged cliffs, coastal trails and secluded beaches attract hikers, birdwatchers and photographers. Conditions along cliffs can be dangerous after rain or high surf, and pathways may be narrowed by erosion.

Big River recreation

State Parks advertises paddling by canoe, kayak or stand-up board in the Big River estuary, along with some bicycling and horseback riding routes. Water conditions, tides and habitat rules must be checked separately.

A park rather than an unrestricted beach

The park permits dogs under its policies, but that does not exempt owners from leash, wildlife protection or designated trail restrictions. Contact the park at 707-937-5804 for current closures and safe access.
